Part II MF165 onwards.

The MF-165

The MF 165 replaced the MF-65. The first version was produced from 1965 to 1971. It had a Perkins  AD4.203 diesel engine (3325ccm)or a Continental G176 (2883ccm) petrol engine later a Perkins AG4.212 petrol engine. A updated version was made from 1968 till 1979 with the Perkins  A4.212 (3472ccm)* diesel engine producing 64hp. It was replaced with the MF-565. in 1977.

The MF-165 had six forward gears and two reverse, an additional Multi Power doubled it.

*) The A4.212 was based on the AD4.236 (MF-175 ..) but had a shorter stroke.

  MF-165 by David Perrin
This pictures was sent to me from David Perrin, Wales! 23 November. 2002
This is a 1965 MF 165. This tractor has had an external renovation by a customer of mine for a friend. I have had a thirty year 'love affair' with MF and particularly the 165. So I was very interested to see it rebuilt and offer any advice where requested. This tractor is a little different. It has two-piece rear wheels instead of the normal three and the tires are 38 inch and 7.50x19 which were not available even as an option at the time. The owner was happy to buy new mudguards to cope with the extra height. The restorer,  David Rees made an excellent job.

The difference

 About the DX-100 line

This two pictures shows the difference between the model made at Banner Line, Coventry (left) and the Detroit factory (right) Note the different lighting arrangements.
The picture above left compared with the two under shows the difference between the first series and the updated series. This one is an early Banner Line model with the AD4.203 engine. note the exhaust on the left side.
The updated model with the Perkins AD4.212 engine are easily recognized with the exhaust on the right side.

The 135 to 188 tractors were referred to as 'The Banner Lane Models' to differentiate from those made at Beauvais, France, the Detroit plant and other world factories. The 135 to 185 were defined as the '5' line and 148 to 188 were defined as the '8' line. (in house MF-terms) The updated 165 and  upwards was given 'wet' brakes and had the hydraulic pressure increased to 3000psi from 2550psi. In addition the 168 and 188 were fitted with Lanchester type balance units in the engine to give smoother running due to the 'two up' and 'two down' piston positions. The 148 with the three cylinder engine did not require any balancing with its piston positions.

This information was provided by David Perrin (Wales) who have been trained on the 100 series at the Training School in Warwickshire,  and have then been working with MF-tractors for around 30 years.

 THANKS for the information!

The MF-175 & -180.

The MF-175 was a brand new model, with a Perkins AD4.236 (3866ccm) diesel engine made specially to fit the tractor. It was produced from 1965 till 1968. From 1968-71a updated version called the MF-175S was available.  The MF-180 was similar, built in America for the American marked, from 1965-74. The MF-180 had higher clearance and was considered a row-crop tractor. The Continental G206 petrol engine was available, from 1969  a petrol version of the Perkins engine was available, the AG4.236. The AD4.236 engine had a balancer shaft for smooth running.

The MF-175 was only available with a standard clearance, adjustable front axle. The Mf-180 had high clearance row-crop types with either a wide adjustable or dual-wheel tricycle front end.

The best way to identify a late MF-175 from a early version is the high steering drag link on early models, the newer tractors had a much lover steering drag link The early versions also had cast front wheels centre.

The MF-178 & -185

In 1968 the MF-178 replaced the MF-175. The MF-178 had a larger engine, the Perkins AD4.248 (4062ccm). In 1972 the MF-185 then replaced the MF-178. The MF-185, later become the MF-188 as the Super Speck tractor. The MF-178* was made from 1968-71, the MF-185 from 1971-79.
